Next Step Challenge Spotligt Q&A with Zylia:

Describe your startup and product as if you were describing it to a non-tech person on the street.
What is ZYLIA Recording System? World’s first single device recording system that allows multitrack recording and instruments separation based on microphone array technology. Thanks to ZYLIA Recording System musicians can record their music sketches, performances and rehearsals in an easy way using a single spherical microphone.

Describe how you got the idea to start your business.
The founders worked previously together in a US based company (Telcordia Technologies) and decided to start a business on their own. The rest of the team was recruited to work on a novel audio recording technology within a research project. The project ended with great success and very promising results that is why the team moved into product development phase. This is how the ZYLIA Recording System microphone array was built. The atmosphere within the team is really great and all the members are very excited to bring this novel technology to the market. Some of them are also amateur musicians so they work to make their dreams come true. Our goal is clear – we want to change the way people think about audio recording… We want them to record audio like never before!

How does your product/service works?
Nowadays, if you want to make a decent live recording of a medium-sized band you need a basic recording kit consisting of several microphones, stands, a mixer and a sound registering device. And don’t forget about meters of cables that tend to get tangled up. All of these things take up space, often have to be transported despite sometimes being quite heavy and setting them up is time-consuming. Not mentioning the specific knowledge you need to have about equipment and sound engineering to make it work.

ZYLIA Recording System is a single microphone device that packs all the crucial functions of the aforementioned kit into one compact object. Let us picture a room with a few musicians playing simultaneously. They are recording rehearsals with ZYLIA Recording System microphone placed between them. At the end of their rehearsal, thanks to ZYLIA Recording System, they can listen to what they’ve played together or they can obtain separated tracks of instruments or vocal. How is this possible? The device processes audio data to obtain separated tracks. Such tracks can be passed to DAW applications like Pro Tools.

Why did you apply for the Next Step Challenge program?
Our goal is to scale up the business, introduce ZYLIA Recording System to the Danish music market and learn from the best. We are especially interested in cooperation with Bang & Olufsen to improve our product in terms of technology and design.
